Creative Tools are Empowering the Jobs of the Future

In a 1965 “Electronics” magazine article, Gordon Moore contended that “cramming more components onto integrated circuits” would “lead to such wonders as home computers… automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment.” Gordon Moore, creator of Moore’s law (the theory that computing power doubles each year), was exactly correct in his contention. As circuits (and what are now microchips) became more powerful, technological advances became possible, and our lives became increasingly automated.

The prospect of “automation” inspires a sense of dread and anxiety for many American workers. As robots and artificial intelligence continue to improve and widen in ability, more and more jobs begin the steady decline into automation. While it is true that robots will most likely replace factory workers, and artificial intelligence will automate (and therefore eliminate) many finance jobs, robots and artificial intelligence will also free humans to focus on what we do best: think creatively.

Joseph Pistrui, writing in a Harvard Business Review article, explains that “the future of human work is imagination, creativity, and strategy”. Creative jobs are hard, if not impossible to completely automate, leaving those with creative talent security from artificial intelligence competition. Instead of replacing creatives, artificial intelligence will instead enable creativity to flourish with tools that enhance creative thought, and empower creatives to further their passions.

Enhancing creative thought and empowering creatives has become the focus of businesses large and small. Some startups, including Omneky, have made it their mission to enable small businesses to harness the power of creative-AI to create better products, grow business, and develop deeper customer relationships. Other businesses focus more on creating tools for creatives.

Adobe Systems is a perfect example of this. Known for its photoshop and other media editing software, Adobe is quickly incorporating artificial intelligence into its products. In photoshop, for example, users can harness artificial intelligence to piece together images. Adobe’s AI is able to guess which pieces of the image a user wants to keep, and can automatically edit out unwanted scraps. In other Adobe software, like Adobe After Effects (a video editing tool), AI is able to help editors enhance focus on the main character in a scene, which is incredibly helpful when working with footage not shot in front of a green screen.

Beyond major players like Adobe, small startups (and nonprofits) are also creating the future of creative-AI. Open-AIis one prime example. Comprised of two arms, one for-profit business and one non-profit organization, Open-AI allows for artificial intelligence breakthroughs to be open-source. Furthering their goal of ensuring that artificial intelligence “benefits all of humanity”, Open-AI often posts clear guides about their recent breakthroughs. Two important projects featured on their website are Musenet and Jukebox, open source AI that can create original music based on an input song. Jukebox is able to go so far as to create some vocal notes, and incorporate them into its generated music.

Omneky is one of the startups focused on empowering businesses and creatives to make better advertisements using the latest AI technology to generate personalized ads at scale. Users choose from templated designs created from AI and can edit the generated ad using Omneky’s photo-editing tool which is able (in real time) to predict performance and offer suggestions for copy, imagery, and placement of creative elements. Omneky has been compared to the “grammarly” of advertising design and is quickly establishing itself as a potent force in the creative-AI world.

As computing power continues to grow rapidly, more and more creative-AI tools will populate the market, serving only to enhance and empower creatives to do what they do best: create. Leaps in quantum computing for example, will allow humans to automate more than they ever have imagined, and will make artificial intelligence stronger and more innovative. Much of the future of Creative-AI is unknown, simply because it is hard to imagine what will be created next! What is certain, however, is that the future is creative.
